Get ready for cuteness overload with this adorable DIY Dollar Store Gnome Makeover! They are so quick and easy to make and can be displayed indoors or out. Add several to your garden, or display indoors next to plants. 

Did you see the sweet little gnomes at the Dollar Store? They were already cute on their own, but they just didn’t go with my decorating style, so I thought I would give them a little makeover.

Let’s get to this simple tutorial.

• Dollar Store Gnomes
• Paper Napkins or Tissue Paper
• Dark Wax
• Stiff Bristle Brush
• Mod Podge
• Chalk Paint

how to makeover dollar store gnomes

Start by painting the gnomes white. You may have to give them a couple of coats. My DIY chalk paint would be perfect for these! I love the aged look, so I didn’t cover them gnomes entirely in white. You can see a little bit of the color showing underneath. It’s totally up to your preference. 

Next up, take a napkin and separate the plys until you get to just the printed layer. Apply Mod Podge to the parts you want to cover, like his hat or shoes. Gently add your napkin to the Mod Podge area and smooth down. Trim away the napkin, or once dry it will tear away easily. You can have so much fun with pattern and color here! I thought the stars on the hat would be a fun patriotic look. 

The main thing is to have fun with it. You can even use old books and newspaper along with mod podge to add a little extra detail. To age the little guys I used a dark wax. It helps the cracks get dark and the whole thing looks slightly worn, which I love. Use a stiff bristle brush and add small amounts of dark wax to your gnome. Buff the wax with a soft cloth until you get a slight sheen and the darkness you desire.
