Garage Sale Cabinet Decorated

I’ve had many garage sale finds I’m proud of over the years, and this one is definitely at the top of my list!! When my mom was in town, we were out and about on the weekend, and we just so happened to drive past a garage sale– and you know I had to stop!

Among, other great finds, this gorgeous diamond in the rough was sitting there, under-loved, underused, and eager to please!! I grabbed this bad boy for…. $15!!! Would you have guessed that!? Seriously such a steal, I can’t get over it! I bet this would normally cost upwards of $100-$200 brand new– and well, I have 2 things to say about that! I personally like the worn look, and they don’t make ’em like they used to!

So, like with most things, I bought it, without a real plan on what I was going to do with it! But for $15, do you blame me?

After some of my usual working and re-working of my home decor in my head, I found the perfect spot– above the tub in my bathroom! Not only was I looking for a change in this spot, but it’s a great place to have some storage for soaps, towels, allll the bathroom things you may need when you’re in the tub!

I know to some this may seem like a beast to hang, or maybe even you aren’t a fan of hanging things on your walls. The question is always, “what if I want to move it?” Well, my friend, I say– HANG IT ANYWAY! It’s similar to how people always save the good china, for decoration only, or special occasion only! Stop saving things for later– don’t save the good china, don’t shelter away the gorgeous silver, and always hang the pretty decor! A hole in the wall can be easily fixed, trust me!

I tackled hanging this beast two ways. First I used D rings on the top. These screw into the back of a piece and you can buy different sizes based on weight. Anytime something screws in over nailing it, I feel like you have a stronger hold. The piece hangs on two screws, secured to the wall by sheetrock anchors. Again, use the proper size based on weight. I went one step further for added security…

I hung the piece then drilled two holes through the back. Next I took the shelf off the wall and added sheetrock anchors to the large  pre-drilled holes. Then I re-hung the cabinet and used large washers with screws to secure through the back of the cabinet to the wall. This might be overkill, but I don’t want this cabinet crashing on me during tub time!!! If you want to see more tips for haning items in your home, check out my list of hanging tips and tools here!

Once I was able to get this hung, then came the fun part– DECORATING!

As some of you may know, I like my decor to be gorgeous and functional, not one or the other! And this was no different!

Throughout the cabinet, I tried to sprinkle a little functional with little pretties, and I think it turned out pretty great! The key here is separating out the weight, bringing the eyes back and forth. By staggering different sizes, textures, patterns, and colors, you make for a really exciting treat to the eyes!

Some things I put in my cabinet specifically are towels, for use, a mini planter for decoration, some dove soap, for use, a fancy french soap, to look at for a while, and then maybe for use, some bath bombs, for use–obviously, a silver dish because I adore silver, epsom salt because it’s a must, and some faux greenery!

Of course, this cabinet would not be complete without a touch of life– some real greenery! So, I just threw it on top where it can get plenty of Sun, and I truly think the cabinet wouldn’t be complete without it!

This cabinet is now and will remain a favorite of mine for a while! And even though you may not get lucky enough to find the same cabinet in a garage sale for $15, I hope you can take some pieces of inspiration from it! Whether it’s a decorating idea or even if it simply means you’ll hang that piece you’ve been holding off on for years!

  1. You definitely got a bargain! I think it would have been more than $200.00 in a shop-you just don’t see things like this very often! You adorned it with just the right amount of decoration Vs. practical! Good job!

  2. I love this! Honestly wish I could find a cupboard similar. I found one without doors for my guest bathroom but it would look nicer with doors.
