The Ladysmith Look: Styling A Bedroom

There’s  a reason my bedroom hasn’t made the home tour on my blog yet. I can never get the bed right. I have the hardest time dressing a bed. Isn’t that silly!? The master bedroom seems to get pushed down the decorating to do list in comparison to the rest of the house. Even more often it is a landing spot for all the odd and end furniture and trinkets that don’t go anywhere else. My bedroom décor just never seems to come together.  Anybody else feel like that?

Recently I got to visit Miranda Lambert’s bed and breakfast hotel, The Ladysmith (sad update: the B&B is now closed!). It was perfection. Of course, this dismal feeling I have toward my bedroom décor meant I LOVED the feel all the bedrooms at The Ladysmith gave…a feeling of well thought out completion. Nothing like a typical “hotel” and different from your average B&B. Today we break down some steps to pulling your bedroom together, complete with tips from The Ladysmith’s interior designer, Phara Queen.

I don’t like a bed with five million pillows, because to me that’s not real. What do you do with all of them when you have to sleep? Maybe you don’t sleep. Personally, I  like sleep. I’m sure you pile them on the floor or in a corner somewhere, but for a girl who doesn’t get all jazzed about making a bed in the morning that is way to much work. I need simplicity that looks good.  I had a chance to tour all the rooms at The Ladysmith on my recent visit and I came home inspired. I can totally do this. You can too.

When I spoke with Phara about my bed styling dilemma she shared a simple recipe she uses. Phara told me, “Use a lot of layers. I always do pops of color in the pillows. Always have pillows made with zippers so you’re not married to that design and can switch it out. I always bring back the duvet and have it at the foot of the bed with a blanket of some sort. Lots of background pillows with pops in front of them. Then I always add a roll of some kind, either a neck roll or a long flat pillow. It’s all in the layers. You want to have enough layers in your room’s patterns and textures that you keep a person’s eye moving. You don’t want the eye to necessarily just land on one thing. That is what makes it interesting.”

Now, let’s not just focus on the bed making the bedrooms fabulous even thought they hog up main stage. These rooms are amazing because they all have huge plays on pattern and texture like we talked about last week. From wood planked walls to brick to the most stunning wallpapers my eyes have feasted on there is always something fun going on vertically.  A dressed up accent wall can do wonders for your ho hum bedroom.

Family photos are great anywhere in your home. We should all be proud to showcase our people, but take a tip from the Ladysmith and add some architectural elements to the wall for an interesting variation. Just look at the attention a 3D element, like an old gate or skull mount, commands. Mix some in with your photos for a show stopping gallery wall.

A tip from Phara that really resonates with me is, “look beyond something’s intended purpose.” She does this all over the property. Many of the headboards, lamps and side tables had a previous career. Suitcases and trunks into nightstands, fire equipment and mixed metal as a lamps. Rummage through your garage or attic and see what you have laying around that can fit your need.
