No Sew Porch Quilt DIY
The fall weather makes me think of cozying up under a warm quilt with a cup of hot chocolate, am I alone in that thought? Of course I also think of having a quilt laid out in the grass to watcha soccer game or have a picnic. Quilts really have so many uses. I am so fortunate to a have a few quilts my husband’s grandmother made, they are so wonderful. Of course with family heirlooms like that you don’t want to eat Cheetos and Kool Aid field side or hang them out on in the sun to fade like a porch quilt might do. 
This little project comes to you today alongside some other DIY crafts for fall, at the bottom you will see some other ideas that might just get your crafting to do list cram packed! Be sure to take a peek! I decided to take my current infatuation with stencils and make my very own no-sew porch quilt. Heavens knows my grandkids will never have a hand sewn quilt from me. From my mom yes, me, no way! But I can put some paint down. 
I started out with these precious quilt stencils from Knick of Time’s Vintage Sign Stencils and part of a drop cloth. I measured the space I wanted to fill on my front porch and cut the drop cloth to fit. It has a giant seam down the side and I didn’t even hem the edges. I thought the frayed, worn look adds to the age. My mom will not believe I didn’t hem the edges. lol. Y’all a drop cloth is my answer to everything! They are fabulous!!!! Next I measured the width of the stencils and did some math to see how many would fit across each way. Whatever odd amount was left is what I used to make up the frame. I taped the frame off with Frog Tape. Favorite new trick: run a damp rag down the edge of the tape to seal the edge. Only Frog tape has a special formula that does this, it really makes a difference! (here are some more project ideas to make with FrogTape.) I used black chalk paint and a large paint brush. The cloth takes up a good amount of paint, but the whole project only took me a 16 oz. jar of paint. 
This project lingered over a few days, I would finish one section and do the next later in the day or the following day. After the frame dried I worked my way on, careful to measure and re-measure before I started each new row. You can see the pattern is one I made up based on a format that used the size of the stencils best. I know there are popular quilt patterns you can follow, but I don’t sew, so I made it up as I went! For the stencils I used a large paint brush, always be careful to dab the paint and try not to push the paint under your stencil, paint toward the inside not outward. (if you need some more stencil tips go here) Keep going a layer in until you are complete. 
This DIY porch quilt would look good as a wall hanging and would be cute at a soccer game, it is easy enough to wash for sure! From the street this looks like a real quilt hanging on my porch and it ushers in fall with the promise of a cozy cuddle over at my house! You can see the rest of my fall home here. Where do you buy the drop cloth ? I don’t think you mentioned that + does it come indifferent colors ? I don’t think so , so if I wanted to use the after painted product ad a rug what would I seal it with ? Thanks

Not sure you need to seal with anything The paint stays on and is washable. If you want to use as a rug make sure you use the heaviest duty drop cloth you can find because it may be to flimsy otherwise, sounds adorable though! great idea!

A question, where do you get your drop cloths? Do you order them? Do you like a certain brand? Every time I look for them, they only have a plastic type.
Thank you and I almost always get mine at Lowe’s! I usually get the medium duty one, you can order them online or grab them in the store, best fabric ever! Mind you it is NOT perfect, but that’s why I love it even more!

lol- yes I guess it is “real” just not what people think of! Dropcloth is a great way to get a bunch of fabric for not a bunch of money, it is very forgiving and has charater off the bat!

Hi Kim, I love this idea. I do sew and make quilts, but this is a great way to decorate without putting a real quilt out in the weather to get ruined. Which size stencils did you use from Knick of time- small or large? Thanks so much for the practical things and those near and dear to your heart!
