Round Top Trends Spring 2019

Shopping the fields, barns and tents at Round Top Antiques Week in Texas is one of my all time favorite things to do. Twice a year I head down to the tiny town of Round Top, Texas as it explodes into a vintage junker’s heaven. Fields and miles stretch the Texas countryside as the most exquisitely styled stores and shops pop up from the Texas dirt. As my boots log miles of walking my eyes catch repetitive objects and trends emerge. This is where I share the on trend items so you can look for them in your neck of the woods!

Some goods make the list repeatedly over multiple seasons and that is no surprise…antiques are often timeless and therefore the perfect investment for your decor. Some things may have been a round a while, but seemed to have a strong presence in the perfectly styled vignettes the shop keepers curate. This list and these mouth watering pictures should get you inspired to hunt for popular antique items (or use the stuff you already have!) and use them in new and exciting ways. Vintage Trend List

1. Corbels – these are pricey items to score at an antique show, so keep you eyes peeled for good deals at auctions and garage sales. They typically cost $75 and upwards for a vintage pair. The large the corbel, the larger the price tag. They are beautiful to use for practical purposes like holding up shelves, but are gorgeous displayed on a cabinet or worked into a stylish vignette.
2. Silver – vintage silver was EVERYWHERE! Buckets, tables and tubs full. Mixed into decor styles, layered in tables-capes, hung on the walls, you name it and there was silver involved.
3. Teapots mainly in silver – this is an extension of the previous trend, but worth mentioning on its own. Silver tea pots and coffee pots were all over the place. I saw soooo many and there were so many unique shapes and sizes. They weren’t used in the traditional manner, they were used for decorative purposes and it was stunning!
4. Tins – Old coffee cans, food tins, tobacco tubs. They are bursting with great color and vintage typography so they just makes sense for the perfect decorating addition. I suggest looking for tins with your color pallet or items with a personal meaning to you. They are great to decorate with, fill with candle wax or use as practical and pretty storage.@jillsuzannemurphy
5. Flashcards & Game pieces – I love littles and these tiny things are so fun to search through for your favorite letter or number. Collect words that mean something to you. Use them in decorating, add them to scrapbook pages or picture frames, cork boards and all kinds of crafting. These small finds are the best way to spend a buck or less!@jillsuzannemurphy
6. Large prints on cloth – These were not vintage items, but had a vintage feel to them. Large cloth scrolls were seen hanging in booths and stores.@OldGloryAntiquesSome had inspiring words and saying, many had vintage botanical prints on them. Some were hand painted (LOVE).@MarigoldtradingThese canvases are gorgeous for decorating and great for filling a large space.@marigoldtrading
7. Ladders – Tons of orchard ladders were spotted this trip. Ladders are beautiful tucked in a corner holding blankets, out on a porch filled with plants or even hung horizontally on a wall for interest.@casparandgerardsantiques
8. Vintage Fur Coats – Ladies, get your mink out – they are back. I must have seen dozens of vintage furs scattered through the fields in Warrenton and Round Top! People are buying them to wear. I’m sure PETA would have a field day with this trend alert, but I am just the messenger, so don’t get mad at me. They were for sale by day and worn at night for the Junk Gypsy prom, but I promise…these are a real deal fashion trend for evening-wear.
9. Patches – My mind is churning with the craft potential of vintage patches. There were many buckets of patches to pilfer through in the fields. Military, high school, name badges, your for the pickin’ and craftin’.
10. Old Photos – Always in style and always fun to flip through, a stack of vintage photographs holds endless potential. Another cheap buy that is fun to add to your style mix. You can use this idea here to update your antique photo finds.
11. Cubbies – Large and especially table top. Large cubbies always make the list, whether old card catalogs or sorting bins from an old shop large cubby bins are a fun find and stunning furniture pieces.@oldgloryantiquesThis trip I was smitten with all the small tabletop size boxes of drawers and cubbies. They add height and the styling possibilities are endless! @theoldgrainery
12. Paint brushes & hand brooms – This sounds like an odd item, but they were all over the place. I saw vintage paint brushes crusty with dried paint resting in table top bowls. Then there were the hand held brooms that layered into small vignettes to add a beautiful texture in the background.
13. Birdcages – An antique fair staple, birdcages are a personal favorite of mine. I’ve yet to purchase the big cage of my dreams, but I always admire them during Antique’s Week and this show was no different. @vintagestationtomball Wood, iron, ornate or simple they are all awesome stuffed with greenery or collectibles. They can be pricey, but I snatched one at a garage sale for a dollar once, so keep your hunting eyes seeking!
