When this little 1960’s beauty caught my eye I was really thinking it would be great fun for a kid’s room. A little side table makeover was in order.a 1960's side table gets a WHITE DIY chalkpaint recipe makeover for this #furnituremakeover #chalkpaint #paintedfurniture

Labeled $15 at a thrift store, it was actually half price day and I got it for eight bucks!a 1960's side table gets a WHITE chalkpaint makeover for this #FurnitureRefresh challenge. huntandhost.net

Then it sat outside my house for the last four months or so and I devised a different plan for it. I have Christmas to thank.

The house reconstruction once the holiday decor is taken down got me rearranging furnture and working on some spots in the house that I don’t love.

I moved this here and that there.

Then a spot opened up for this lovely.a 1960's side table gets a WHITE chalkpaint makeover for this #FurnitureRefresh challenge. huntandhost.net

The orangey varnish finish is rough, but the shape and built-in bookshelf situation make me happy. This table needed a makeover in a big way.

I blog with  a group of ladies that love to flip furniture and this month’s challenge is all about WHITE. Which worked out perfect, because that is just what this table needed!

I sanded out a few rough spots and then used my homemade chalk paint to give it a nice clean, fresh winter coat. I actually used the same white paint that runs throughout my house, Sherwin Williams Pearly White.

It’s a  warm, clean white that takes on light and color in amazing ways. My paint recipe calls for Plaster of Paris (affiliate link) and water , be sure to check out the full tutorial for all the details.  Another project with the same color is my soda crate jewelry organizer. a 1960's side table gets a WHITE chalkpaint makeover for this #FurnitureRefresh challenge. huntandhost.net

I sand between coats sometimes, but always after the final. I distressed this piece on the edges and added a touch of dark wax for an aged feel.a 1960's side table gets a WHITE chalkpaint makeover for this #FurnitureRefresh challenge. huntandhost.net

Now it sits nestled between some comfy chairs in my living room and perfectly holds my magazines and drink.a 1960's side table gets a WHITE chalkpaint makeover for this #FurnitureRefresh challenge. huntandhost.net

  1. Way to go! You saw something in that ugly little before table and now it’s beautiful! So perfect with the paint job and the spot you chose.

  2. Wow! I can’t believe how the paint transformed the outdated piece of furniture!? It not only looks great, but the “new spot” is perfect for it. Between the new paint and the great place between the chairs, it no longer looks outdated…..far from it!! Thanks for sharing – I love looking for furniture at thrift stores (my husband’s hobby is refinishing furniture), and have probably been guilty of bypassing furniture like this. I need to look closer and imagine the possibilities!

    1. Well – the price definitely helped my take the plunge on this one! There are so many great overlooked pieces out there. I am sure with your eye and husband’s talent you could redo just about anything!!!

  3. Kim – I LOVE this. I think it is so hard to repaint furniture and keep the vintage feel without being heavy handed. You do an amazing job!!! I want one! 🙂

  4. Perfection! I don’t think you could have bought a new piece of furniture that would have looked that good! Anytime you want to teach a complete newbie a DIY lesson, feel free! 😉 I wouldn’t know where to start on something like this. I’m constantly amazed at your creations! Keep ’em coming! Great job!

  5. You asked in your email for feedback. I have loved hearing your story of faith and it has often spoken to me in a way that is both challenging and well timed for me

  6. I love how it turned out. I painted one similar to that at one time and I can tell you it was not easy getting into all those nooks and crannies with a paintbrush! Nice job!

  7. Great table makeover! Kim are those accent chairs the Ektorp chairs from IKEA? If so, I’ve been thinking about getting them myself and would love to know how you like them? And the white covers 😉
    Thanks, Ronda

    1. yes they are! We love the chairs, such a great price and they wash easily, I just need to wash them more often :/ three kids, a dog and a cat are a bit much! They hold up well and the covers are super cheap if you need to replace them altogether. I recommend them for sure.

  8. I saw that picture of that table and thought to myself “that table is so ugly”. You did a great job on it and now it looks perfect in your living area. I know I would have never seen the potential in it.

    1. lol, I was on the fence for sure when I saw it. I was part of a furniture flip group at the time and I knew it would be a good makeover though, so often the accountability of this blog leads me to the best treasures!

  9. What an adorable little library table. I don’t know about where you live, but here in Arizona the price would have been $80. Unfortunately, when grandma moves to Arizona everything stays where she came from. I go to estate sales where everything is from the 80s and 90s, and ridiculously priced. I have to get lucky at a thrift store for good stuff but still pay for it.

    1. I know different parts of the country are different. People really are crazy with garage sale prices, but every once in a while you hit a jackpot and it’s SO FUN!!! Happy hunting, hope you find some treasures on the cheap soon!
