Advent has always been one of my favorite times to slow down, reflect, and create. There’s something beautiful about pairing quiet moments with Scripture, color, texture, and prayer — especially in the middle of an incredibly busy season. But sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing where to begin.

Creative Advent Journaling Prompts

Waiting With Hope
Layer soft translucent papers (tissue, tracing, vellum) to represent hope growing beneath the surface. Write what you’re waiting for under one layer.

Quiet Expectation
Paint or collage a small circle in the center of your page and journal your quiet hopes for this season around it.

Slow Growth
Use watercolor to paint branching lines or vines. Add prayers or words of slow, steady growth along each branch.

Meeting God in the Waiting
Divide your page into contrasting colors—“before” and “after.” Journal across the boundary about how God met you in a waiting season.

A Promise You’re Holding
Create a simple pocket and tuck in a decorated tag with a Scripture promise you want to cling to this month.

Light Breaking Through
Paint a glowing center with soft, diluted acrylics. Add tiny pen marks radiating outward with things God has illuminated for you.

When Darkness Didn’t Win
Start with a dark background, then use a white pen or paint to draw symbols of God’s presence breaking into the shadows.

God With Us
Draw or paint a winding path and write moments from this year when God was near along the curves.

Carrying Light
Glue a bright scrap of paper or foil onto your page. Around it, write ways you can carry God’s light to others.

Peace in the Chaos
Create a chaotic background of scribbles or splatters. Layer a calm shape on top — a circle, dove, or heart — to represent God’s steady peace.
