The Dollar Store doesn’t seem like the best place to shop for a luxury gift, but it can be a great source for an inexpensive gift that you can make uber personal!

I’ve joined a few friends to share some simple gift giving ideas from one of my favorite places to peruse…the Dollar Store!

I never want to come off looking cheap when I give a gift, but sometimes the budget isn’t as big as the wish list.

You know…100 teacher gifts, party favors or Christmas gifts add up! When I stroll the aisles at any of my fav dollar store spots I always have my eyes open for something that can be upcycled into a high end treat.

These glass jars caught my eye a while back and now I wish I would have thought of this idea sooner! Of course ideas often follow necessity and this is no different.

While shopping with my kids in our sweet little downtown the other day my boys each spent $4 on a bath bomb. yes, you read that right, my boys!

I couldn’t believe my eyes and thought we needed to get to making our own bath bombs pronto! $4 of their own money. I was stunned.

I decided if we were going to make our own bath bombs we would need a cute place to store them and that’s where the glass jars came into place. (The one above is the one I created for my boys)

I completely plan on sharing our DIY bath bomb recipe…once it’s perfected and it’s not quite yet. It’s still a work in progress.

Till then I am sharing this simple gift idea. (it was really hard to capture how cute the etching turned out so I added some black paper in the jar so you could see it completely!)

Transfer paper for stencils

Step 1: Start by gathering cute glass storage jars from your local Dollar Store.

Step 2: I used my Cricut to cut personalized one time use stencils. Let me know if you guys want to see a tutorial on that. It’s pretty easy to do and makes all the difference in your simple gift.

Everyone loves to see their name or monogram written out. It means you thought ahead and made a special gift just for them.

To make the stencils affordable I use contact paper, it’s inexpensive and you can buy large rolls of it to use for a variety of projects.

I collect fun fonts and webdings that help make easy stencil ideas come to life.

Step 3: Place your one time use stencil onto the glass jar, careful to line it up and center it where you want the first time, it’s hard to move without ruining your stencil.

Transfer paper might come in handy for this if you have a small or intricate stencil.

Make sure the stencil is on securely and there is little to no room for the etching cream to get under the stencil.

Step 4: With a small brush carefully brush on the etching cream. Try not to push the cream under the stencil edges so you have nice crisp lines.

Follow the jar directions, but I found letting the cream sit a little longer than stated helps the etch to be more prominent.

I also repainted over the area after a few minutes to cover any spots I might have missed the first time.

Step 5: Rinse off under running water, remove stencil and rinse completely.

Step 6: Fill your jar with goodies. Things like Epsom salts, bath bombs, candy, craft supplies, baked goodies, spices, a plant, candles, nail polish, makeup, fun markers and supplies.

The possibilities are endless. This simple Dollar Store DIY gift is perfect for teachers gifts, bulk Christmas gift, Graduation gifts, housewarming presents or just because!

This would be precious paired with a homemade bath tray.

  1. I have seen jars like this at the Dollar Store, this is a great way to use them. I am a big fan of glass etching too. I’m saving this idea for Christmas, thanks!

  2. Don’t even need the Dollar Store. At times I feel like a hoarder, I save all glass jars. I use those and paint the tops. Sometimes I punch a hole in the top and use a cute little knob to place on the top, but your etching idea is so personal and it makes a great little hostess gift. Very thoughtful. Thanks for the idea.
