Six Dollar Store Ideas for Spring Flowers: Gift Box to Blooming Storage

Dollar Store ideas are my favorite. A great makeover that’s affordable to do and comes without buyer’s remorse can have you decorating your home with style in no time! When my friends suggested we get together once a month to share dollar store projects I was on board in a flash. This month’s theme was Dollar Store flowers for spring and you will get SIX ideas to try from this crafty bunch, the links are at the bottom. I have to admit I am not a huge fan of fake flowers. I want to be, I try to be, but every time I look at them I go home and use something live instead. Then it occurred to me, maybe I was approaching the whole faux flower thing wrong. Maybe I needed to use them in a way they weren’t necessarily supposed to look real. Maybe I should use them as a fun, meant to look fake, I’m playing up the fact that they are fake, kind of way. You know what I mean? 

As I walked the aisles looking at faux florals I decided these white flowers were perfect to use in my daughter’s room. There was an entire plan in mind that hit the back burner once I got home and remembered this wine gift box I had. It had been hanging around for a looooong time waiting for a makeover. Finally, it’s number was up.

I started by drilling two more holes in the other end of the box to match the holes it already had for a handle. More to come on this part later.

Next the whole thing got a fresh coat of chalk paint. That grape vine scene was reminiscent of a wall paper border that adorned most kitchens in the 90’s, it had to go. The hardware got painted too, it was kind of dark and quiet frankly it’s easier to just paint it all! A light distressing let the dark wood show through, I thought that part was pretty. It’s always nice to have a little surprise when you open a box and I wanted this one to shine inside and out! Inside the top lid got a contrasting coat of white chalky paint(my recipe here!), then I hand painted the word Bloom (tutorial here). How cute is that little accent? Here comes the flower part! I bought two bunches of white flowers and snipped the blooms off the stems using wire cutters. With heavy duty glue I arranged the flowers to “bloom” out of the top of the box. I nestled three together at a time with the stems facing each other so just flowers show around the top.   To finish off the box I got rid of the current handles and braided threes strands of jute twine, laced them through the holes on each end and tied them off to make new handles. This little box may still show up in my daughter’s room, but not how I initially intended, that’s a whole other story!There are a ton of great projects just waiting to be done for little to no money, just roam the aisles of your local dollar store, search in your junk closet, gift wrap stash or kitchen cabinets and you will come up with some amazing DIY home décor.
