Old Tool Santa

In my heart of hearts I believe everything can be made new. It’s one of the reason I love to make things over versus buying new things. It speaks to my heart. I found these old tools for $1 each at a thrift store. They were rusty dusty mason trowels. I think $1 must be my magic number, I have a hard time passing up something rusty and interesting if that’s all is costs! Last Christmas I shared with you my silver spoon Santa trinkets and everyone loved them. These rusty trowels seemed perfect for a holiday transformation!I used the same steps as last time, but on a bigger scale. For the Santa I felt like the shape just looked like a pointy Santa hat and long flowing beard.

Simply start in layers like shown here.Since there was plenty of room for a flowy beard I used the paint to add movement and texture to his white (with a little grey streaked in) beard! Sketch in his eyes and paint them. Be sure to let each layer dry completely before moving on. You will outline his eyes with black next. For his rosy cheeks water down your brush and the paint, then just dip the edge of your brush in the paint and move in one big streaking motion. You can add water with a clean brush to thin out the red some more if needed. Add his mustache next to cover his cheeks. Isn’t he so cute and jolly?

The tree was obvious as a tall slender evergreen with a chunky stump. I wanted a little extra texture, so I used a hot glue gun to add “garland” to my tree. Paint green allover. Add snow covered branches, metallic are fun to use. It’s hard to see in the picture, but up close they shimmer. 🙂 Paint your garland gold for a sweet little tree.
