Y’all. Watermelon is our summer bestie. I love to slice a cold watermelon up for my family and the kids love to slurp and drip a hunk of melon on a warm summer day. Plus I love to decorate with them.

Sometimes the holidays throw me off in decorating because I want to stay the course with the style of my home, my color pallette and decor preferences, but I want to add some fun and color outside my normal color lines.

I decided a little DIY watermelon was the way to go. This way I could marry some vintage style with summer fun and make it work for our muted color scheme. So often I feel like the store bought holiday decor is too new or too loud for my style.

If you haven’t been collecting old books for decor and grabbing a few old ones at garage sales and thrift stores you need to! (See the rest of my must have thrifting supplies here!) I always keep old books on hand for crafting and an old Reader’s Digest came to the rescue for this fun summer craft.

You can always print vintage music sheets, hymnal pages or book pages if you aren’t comfortable ripping up an old book.

How to Make Watermelon Garland with A Vintage Feel

  1. Tear out multiple old book pages (or print one like I mentioned). You’ll want to use as many pages as you would like watermelon pieces on your garland. An odd number usually looks best, so keep that in mind.Make this DIY watermelon garland for your summer decor. 2. Stack your pages and cut a large half circle across the bottom of the pages.
  3. Lightly fold in half (try not to crease the page) and rip starting at a top point to the outside of the curved bottom to create a watermelon wedge shape. You might want to do these last two steps in a stack so each garland piece is similar in shape and size.
  4. Use white acrylic craft paint and paint a swath of white across the bottom to create the rind.
  5. Add a small row of green acrylic craft paint along the bottom edge. Make this DIY watermelon garland for your summer decor. This budget friendly summer craft is perfect for a summer mantel or summer tablescape! #summerdecor #summercraft #watermelondecor
  6. For the watermelon seeds use the handle tip of your paint brush and dip it into black acrylic craft paint. Dot the seed and drag the brush tip up to create the point of your seed. Repeat.
  7. Punch two holes in the top portion of your watermelon pieces and string them up with fun yarn or jute string. This little watermelon decor will look cute strung across your mantel, sideboard, empty picture frames or shelves for a sweet summer touch that doesn’t leave a sticky trail behind it!

Try mixing it up by layering it with some pom pom garland or rag garland for a fun look. Now the real watermelon question is…Do you eat your watermelon with or without salt??? Do tell… Before you leave be sure to visit my thrifty friends and their awesome summer decorating ideas below!
