how to make diy faux corn

  1. Sketch out the shape of a corn cob and cut it out. As I always say, don’t overthink this- done is better than perfect. And the corn husks will cover up the shape a bit anyways so if it’s slightly wonky, that’s ok!
  2. Paint the entire corn cob using Apple Barrel in Golden Sunset.

  3. On a piece of scrap cardboard, put a little dab of all the paints. We’re about to start painting our cob. They key here is that you can’t just paint little dots on sporadically, you have to go in a line- look up a corn cob and you’ll see what I mean. I did some kernels in Delta Creative ceramcoat in yellow only, some mixed with the color parchment from folkart, and even some in golden sunset mixed with parchment. Then, I took some barn red paint and put some darker kernels on our cob. Then, some mixed with barn red and parchment. The 2 key parts to this step to remember- 1. the kernel colors need to be sporadic, but they do need to be in a straight line over and over again. And 2. the colors can be mixed rather randomly. If you look up different corn cobs on the internet, they are all sightly different and unique- so don’t worry about it. This DIY faux corn is what your Fall decor is missing! 4. Lastly, we need to attach our corn husks. I started by gluing 2 corn husks onto the back of the cardboard, both sticking out some. Then, I added as needed. Generally that meant about one more on the back and 1-2 more on the sides, to make it full. This is your judgement call, and it also likely depends on how you plan to decorate with your faux corn.
