I was feeling the need to change up the dining room a little bit and a gold painted ceiling was just the trick. Ceilings are the wall you always ignore. Always second place. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Until today.
Our home is a curated mix of styles, collected and layered over time. It’s constantly changing and my mind is always churning with new ideas. I’ve wanted to transform the dining room with a gold ceiling for a while now and WE FINALLY DID IT! Thank you to Modern Masters for sponsoring this post, all ideas and opinions are my own.
You guys – don’t ignore the 5th wall!!! The ceiling is such a fun way to change up a room. So often the ceiling gets left out of all the fun and it really just wants its 15 minute of fame.
We chose Modern Masters Metallic Paint Collection in Olympic Gold for the dining room. I wanted a warm and shiny gold to give a rich glowing feel to the room. This color mixes so well with the vintage chandelier and has the perfect aged feel I was hoping for. In case you aren’t feeling the gold for your ceiling Modern Masters has a TON of other metallic color options to choose from. A TON!!!
We pulled off this paint project in a day and here is how it went down! I say we because my sweet hubby was a huge help in this ceiling makeover. 
Steps to a Painted Ceiling
- We taped off the entire room by using painters tape to seal the ceiling from the crown molding. I attached plastic drop cloth to the painters tape to protect the walls and furniture. Make sure you press firmly for a good clean seal on the tape!
- We used the Modern Masters Metallic Paint Collection Warm Tone Primer a base coat to prep for the metallic gold. I used one of my favorite paint brushes to cut in the edges of the ceiling and my husband used the Modern Master Metallic Paint Collection roller to roll the ceiling. This roller cover is a specifically designed to help prevent lapping in the paint and give beautiful smooth results. Our dining room is 11′ X 12′ and took one and a half quarts of primer. Allow to dry 30 minutes to an hour.
- The hubs and I used the same teamwork method, me trimming, him rolling to add the first coat of Modern Masters Metallic Paint Collection Olympic Gold to the ceiling. You want to work together and move in one direction, painting from the wet edge of the paint using the Modern Masters Metallic Paint Roller cover.
- I used a satin finish for a little extra sheen and this room took approximately 3/4 gallon.
- It took three coats to get the ceiling super smooth and even. This paint is GORGEOUS, but you do have to use multiple coats so the roller marks don’t show and the coverage is full and rich. You can see what it looked like after the first coat here…
- I hand painted the a/c vent cover to match.
- We pulled off the painters tape/drop cloths and it was done!

and now this…
Our home is a brand new, builder basic house and adding this vintage touch makes all the difference in our dining room. I know a metallic gold ceiling is a bold move, my husband wasn’t so sure about it when I pitched my idea, but it looks like a million bucks! I say go bold, go for it and you won’t be disappointed, every bridesmaid needs her turn in the spotlight. Shine bright on her.

I love the look. You are right about the old, tired look. Painting a ceiling is a lot of work, but I think it was totally worth it.!!! How high are your ceilings?
i think these are 10 foot? that is why my husband helped! Actually – I wouldn’t mind doing it but I think I torn my rotator cuff 🙁 MRI this week, so I am not really able to do above my head stuff at the moment.

It is a more brown gold than the bright gold (they have a bright gold too) but this is a bit more aged/muted feeling

I never feel like paint is a brave move because it can always be painted over, redone, changed with relatively little trouble so I say GO FOR IT!!! 🙂

I think you need to bring that color back down somewhere in the lower half of the room so your eye can connect the ceiling to the room. Maybe a touch of gold in your seat fabric or a tiny bit of metallic decor pieces scattered about the room?

I painted our Condo Galley Kitchen ceiling once– a nice mint green! (on the darker side, if pastels have a darker side…..) I loved it! And then I did our dining ceiling in a very light “spring dew” sort of green. I was dying to be creative in that small condo so painting the ceilings was so much fun!! Now, we have “butter” textured ceilings and I have plenty of other things to keep me busy and creative besides messing with that….
