Fun Ways to Add Chunky Texture to Your Journaling (When You Do Want the Bulk!)

Not every journal needs to lie flat. Some journals feel more alive when they grow a little wild…bursting seams, layered pages, thick textures, pockets on pockets, bits sticking out everywhere. There’s something wonderful about a chunky journal you can hold in your hands. It feels like a collection of moments, a book that has lived with you. No one would ever call me a minimalist, so a chunky, overflowing journal is just my speed.

If you love the tactile side of mixed media or you’re working in a journal that has plenty of space to grow, here are some of my favorite ways to add glorious bulk, depth, and dimension to your pages.

Add scraps of fabric or lace
A little frayed edge peeking out of a page adds softness and texture instantly. Fabric is one of the easiest ways to create volume.

Use textured ribbons or trims
Pom-pom trim, rickrack, velvet ribbon, twill tape — all those textures make a page come alive.

Sew on buttons
One button changes the whole personality of a layout. A cluster of three? Magic.

Create layered pockets
Stack pockets on top of pockets and fill them with tags, folded notes, or tiny keepsakes.

Add bulky collage pieces
Chunky chipboard, layered cardstock, stitched clusters, and dimensional ephemera all add weight and personality.

Use little booklets or flip-ups
A mini booklet glued inside your journal adds instant thickness and tons of space to write more privately.

Add wax seals or faux wax seals
Beautiful, tactile, and full of old-world charm.

Use fabric tape instead of paper tape
It folds differently and adds a structural, three-dimensional feel.

Dried flowers (sealed or pressed)
Even pressed flowers add some thickness, but if you like bulk, don’t over-press them. Let them stay a little dimensional.

Bulky layered tags
Add eyelets, jute string, collage bits, mini envelopes, stitching, charms — tags can be tiny texture powerhouses.

Stapled clusters
A few layers of paper with one or two staples add bite-sized bulk.

Glitter
You can never have too much and a thick glorious layer of glitter is nothing but yummy.

Use modeling paste through a stencil
Very thick, very raised, very satisfying. Perfect for creating focal texture.

Add metal items
Paper clips, charms, old keys, beads, jewelry bits. Anything small but solid.

Use corrugated cardboard
Tear back the top layer and let the ribs show. Instant volume.

Create chunky scrapbook-style embellishments
Layer circles, torn squares, frames, and labels until you have a little “art nugget” you can glue down.

Attach envelopes
Full or empty, envelope flaps add movement and dimension.

Use thick thread or embroidery floss
Stitched borders, X shapes, knots, and threaded buttons all add lift.

Make a fabric hinge
Attach a small piece of fabric between two elements so one flips over the other, interactive and textured.

Add bulky washi or fabric tape rolls
Some washi is thin; some is glorious and textured. Use the thick stuff.

Use chunky stamps or waxed paper impressions
Anything that leaves a raised imprint adds tactile interest.

Include found objects
Junk jewelry, hardware store pieces, charms, safety pins, clip-on earrings, tiny shells, anything that can be glued or clipped.

Use glue gun accents
A tiny dot here or there creates raised beads that can be painted over.

Attach pockets with gussets
Fold small gussets (side tabs) so your pocket can expand and hold more.

Use dimensional stickers or chipboard pieces
A little height goes a long way, especially in pockets or clusters.

Add ribbon pulls to your tags and tips-ins
Even a simple ribbon knot creates charming bulk.

Moldings
Use molding forms typically meant for fondant or furniture additions to add heavy detail elements to your journal covers and spines.

Try layered, sewn paper strips
Sewing paper creates a wrinkly, raised edge that adds beautiful rustic texture.

Attach a charm to the spine or page edge
It adds movement, sound, and a touch of personality.

Make fabric swatches or textile collages
Little quilt-like bits are amazing textures for journals.

Chunky paint texture
Use heavy-bodied paints or allow your acrylics to dry thick and raised.

Tip-ins made from thicker materials
Use chipboard, cardboard, or layered cardstock for tip-ins that truly stand out.

There is no “right” amount of bulk. Some journals stay slim and elegant. Some become thick and unruly and absolutely full of life. Your journal can grow with you and sometimes the bulkier it gets, the more joy it brings. Let me know some fun ideas I might have missed on this list!
